Understanding OpusDNS Nameservers and Their Connection to DNS Zones

What do the OpusDNS Nameservers do?

The OpusDNS nameservers are responsible for serving and managing the DNS zones you create on our platform. Every DNS zone created via the dashboard or API is automatically added to our nameserver infrastructure.

We provide a secure and highly available default nameserver setup:

  • ns1.opusdns.com
  • ns2.opusdns.net

These nameservers can be used free of charge when your domain is hosted with us.

How Nameservers and DNS Zones Work Together

In practice, the process works like this:

  1. You register or transfer a domain
  2. You create a DNS zone at OpusDNS
  3. You configure DNS records inside the zone
  4. You assign the OpusDNS nameservers to your domain

Once the domain uses our nameservers, all DNS requests for the domain are answered based on the records configured in your OpusDNS zone.

Domain Registration Flow

For new domain registrations, the process is straightforward:

  1. Register the domain
  2. Create a DNS zone
  3. Configure your DNS records
  4. Use the OpusDNS nameservers

Your domain will immediately use the DNS configuration managed through OpusDNS.

Domain Transfer Flow

Transfers are slightly more complex because the domain already uses DNS zones and nameservers from your previous provider.

Recommended approach

  1. Create the DNS zone at OpusDNS before starting the transfer
  2. Copy the existing DNS records from your current provider
  3. Start the domain transfer
  4. Set the OpusDNS nameservers

This minimizes downtime during the migration process.

Alternative approach

If you first want to complete the transfer before migrating DNS:

  1. Transfer the domain while still using the nameservers of your previous provider
  2. Create the DNS zone at OpusDNS afterward
  3. Recreate or import your DNS records
  4. Switch the nameservers to OpusDNS once everything is ready

Typical Questions

Are DNS zones transferred automatically?

Usually not.

In most cases, we do not know which DNS provider currently hosts your zone or do not have access to the existing DNS configuration.

However, with the AI Concierge, we offer an automated migration service for several domain registrars:

  • Existing DNS zone data is automatically detected
  • DNS records are copied to OpusDNS
  • The domain transfer is then performed automatically

To enable this process, you must first provide credentials for your current provider so the AI Concierge can securely access and migrate the DNS configuration.

Why should I use the OpusDNS nameservers?

The OpusDNS nameservers are:

  • Free to use
  • Highly secure
  • Fully managed
  • Optimized for reliability and performance

This means you do not need to maintain your own DNS infrastructure or manage custom nameserver setups.

Can I use custom nameservers?

Yes.

You can configure custom nameservers in the nameserver section of your domain settings. In this case, the DNS zone must be hosted and managed on your own nameserver infrastructure or at your external DNS provider.

I already host my DNS zones at another provider. Is that possible?

Absolutely.

You can continue using external DNS providers or your own infrastructure by simply configuring their nameservers in your domain settings.

Can I create glue records / host records?

Yes.

Glue records (host records) can be configured directly in the nameserver settings of your domain. You can point them to your own IP addresses as needed.

Can I use the OpusDNS infrastructure with my own branding?

Yes.

We offer vanity nameserver and virtual nameserver solutions for an additional fee. This allows you to use the OpusDNS infrastructure under your own branding and nameserver naming scheme.

Please contact us directly for more information.

I need a 100% SLA. What options are available?

We offer a PremiumDNS SLA service with 100% availability guarantees.

This is a project-based setup where pricing and architecture depend on your specific requirements and infrastructure needs.

Please note that our standard infrastructure already follows modern high-security and high-availability standards. PremiumDNS setups are typically only required for highly specialized enterprise use cases.
